These "flowers" are made of feathers—

and they are part of a hat!

 Andean cultures use feathers as an artistic medium with religious significance. In ritual, flowers represent the food provided by that plant, such as the white flowers above which represent potato plants. To dance in a feathered hat is to give thanks, invoke plant fertility,

and ensure a good harvest.


In pre-Columbian times, dignitaries wore capes and hats made of feather art. This hat is contemporary, from an Aymara-speaking community in Bolivia.
